| The remarketing, reuse and recycling of Fujitsu Siemens Computers products have taken place at the company’s Paderborn, Germany facility since 1988. At Paderborn, approximately 20 percent of Fujitsu Siemens Computers-branded equipment is reused and, currently, only two percent is disposed. The processes employed by Paderborn far exceed the requirements set out in the WEEE directive. |
Position on Individual Producer Responsibility |
Fujitsu Siemens Computers supports the principle of Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR) and recognizes that increasing amounts of end-of-life products, if not properly disposed of, pose a significant threat to the environment.
While Fujitsu Siemens Computers believes IPR can result in more environmentally compliant products and better accountability for equipment manufacturers, it also recognizes that IPR poses significant challenges. Even the most dedicated producer cannot meet the needs and requirements of all stakeholders worldwide in a way that is viable financially, logistically and environmentally. However, Fujitsu Siemens Computers is dedicated to working with the industry at large in order to overcome these challenges.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers has a track record of responsible recycling, remarketing and reuse of electrical and electronic equipment. The company’s Environmental Guideline FSC03230 produces products that lend themselves well to repair, potential upgrading, reuse, disassembly and recycling.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers works very close together with Fujitsu, a leading provider of customer-focused IT and communications solutions for the global marketplace. Fujitsu already offers an environmentally sound recycle service in some countries were no take-back requirement was imposed. More information is available in English and Japanese language. |
Take back - performance |
A successful example of our take back performance is the long established recycling experience in Germany. In 2007, Fujitsu Siemens Computers collected and recycled 9,000 tons of IT equipment and monitors in Germany. This means a take back rate of 22.5 % equivalent to the weight of products sold seven years earlier. This figure takes into account the time difference between products sold and when they are returned for reuse, recycling and recovery. This reflects changes in sales volume.
To set the target for our whole sales region, we forecast a rate of 25 % to achieve by 2010. |
Voluntary take-back of products |
Along with our position on the principle of Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR), our target is to provide a take-back of products wherever our products are sold. The European Union's Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires manufacturers to accept returns of old equipment. The basic goal is to limit volumes of waste going into landfills by setting up collection schemes and encouraging recycling and reuse of materials.
Fujitsu Siemens Computers already reports the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) collected and recycled in an environmental report of the own recycling centre in Germany. In a next step the rate of recovery and the rate of reuse and recycling are checked and controlled in the countries. The aim is to completely report the amount of WEEE collected and recycled on a regular basis.
To ensure the take-back of old equipment, in our whole European, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) sales market, we will extend our voluntary take back and include countries outside the EU. Therefore, we offer to our customer outside the EU the opportunity to communicate their location and the amount of old Fujitsu Siemens Computers' equipment that needs to be recycled to recycling@fujitsu-siemens.com. We will handle these concrete cases in order to implement a sophisticated take-back process adapted to the specific regions.
In addition, we already implemented a Trade-in Program where we accept any manufacturer’s equipment when customers are upgrading to Fujitsu Siemens Computers products. We pay a trade-in allowance for the returned hardware. |
